Philosophically, balance is an interesting notion. My view is that a balanced system (political, organizational, technical, it doesn't matter) breeds complacency, laziness and will actual lead people further away from the reality of the situation. All systems desire to move from a balanced state (which takes effort to get to) to an unbalanced state. It is universal and it is the path of least resistance. The lack of balance breeds intellectualism and yes, even pragmatism in the effort to restore balance, which then has an adverse affect.. Similar to the cyclical nature of the public policy process that I referred to earlier.

As far as color and race, I think we agree. I believe the fact that we have just elected the first black president into office is significant. As my good friend above mentioned, the domestic AND foreign populations will view this as a significant removal of barriers to good will and it does make a strong statement with regards to the long history of discord between races in the U.S. and maybe will help in some national healing along the way. However, if race is the primary reason for putting Obama into office, then we are misguided, uneducated and in fact, have very little respect for the man himself.

I don't care if he's black or white, elephant or jackass. He's President elect and I'm scared poo-less! I'm a die-hard independent and will remain such. But, I'm very afraid and tentative and my confidence is very low...

With the charisma of a master salesman, he managed to say so much and inspire so many while never saying anything substantial or binding... The perfect salesman. Why should we vote for those that talk in plain English about servitude, duty and pragmatism? When does that ever get fun? Now change, wow! Everyone likes "change" or at least we'll try it. Brand new Flavor! New and Improved! Now with Flavor Crystals! It's the sale pitch of the ages... He's got fancy new packaging too! Not black, not white, but gray he appeals to a broader demographic. He's a marketing dream! Now, we are supposed to celebrate because he's black? This is some milestone that is more important than our country? What a consumerist crock and a total absence or pragmatism. The novelty of his color is completely irrelevant to the collective decision we have made. The celebration of that novelty is evidence of a motive that is sad indeed. Fancy packaging is more important than the actual goods?

Bush is unpopular because he faced several 50 year decisions. Many of which had been skirted by the previous jackass in who opted for the 4 year patches. Sheep don't like it when you move them from green pastures, even when the wolves are about. However, when the wolves pop out of the brush the sheep scatter as they mutter, "how could you not see this coming?", never to produce another ewe. Will he squander the tactical advantages our sons and daughters died for in favor of consumerist populism? I hope he doesn't... Hopefully he will make the 50 year decision and not the "eat some of that tall green grass over there by the bushes, my shift ends in 4 years, the next guy can deal with it" decisions.

Time will tell the tale of the downfall of democracy as consumerism vs. production... Balance is necessary for good will and prosperity. We are now completely out of balance... Our appetite has outpaced our supply and yet we voted for bigger plates and smaller plows...

Kathy - Thanks for your comments. As I said, the order of the day to to "agree to disagree and commit". While I believe that the scope of policy, or the intent of that scope, is to be long term, the practice and implementation of policy, at least at the tactical level, tends to be short sighted. I don't believe in broad generalizations, so of course, exceptions exist.

As far as my single comment about electing our first black man as president... I did not mean to minimize it. It is historic and revolutionary. I am proud that America feels empowered to cross racial and historical lines to do something so huge. I only mention it to emphasize that it needs to be mentioned, but we need to get on with the business of governing this country, regardless of races, religions or creeds.

Don - I'm impressed with your patriatism and your obvious strong sense of civic duty as an American. I respect and admire your ferver for your political views and can only imagine how wonderfully you are inspiring your children!! I disagree with you, respectfully, that no elected official thinks past thier next election. I have to believe (or else not sleep at night) that most of our elected officials have chosen to serve because of their love for our country and their desire to affect change or implement policies or security or whatever is the order of the day....things that will last beyond their term. PLEASE Lord, let this be true !?!

I am wondering, old friend, why you only devoted one sentence to the fact that American's elected their first black president? It is such a weighty, momentous, historical event that will have an impact on the entire world. It's huge! I have a very different perspective and unique view of America having lived outside of it for 6 years. I also have the privelege of hearing foreign opinions of America, sometimes not to my liking, and can see what this means to the world and how it can change their opinion of the US for the better.

I salute you my patriotic friend! God bless, Kathy

True, I didn't address the press coverage too much. I think the reason why is because I am certain the media is unable to provide an unbiased view of an election. A focus on popular candidates means more viewers, higher ratings, more paid ad time and therefore more dollars. It is a capitalism at it's best (or worst, depending on your view of the cup). The end result is that constituents who can think for themselves, investigate the platform that they run on and make educated decisions have no need for the liberal media. We can assess and vote accordingly.

Strange Don... ”Texas should secede from the union.. who should we elect president?” - I told Martin the same thing. Even though I was joking... I started thinking about it and the more I thought about it the more I think it isn't such a bad idea. The media has been so in the tank for Obama it makes me sick. Anyone could win an election with this much positive press.

Hallo Don,
because I have some pain in my back since years I went to a doctor. As a consequence I go one day a week to a physiotherapist to work 20 minutes with his “torture machines”. Christoffer knows these machines. Before I had only seven days some pain, but now I have three days hard pain. That’s because I’ve never done sports.

Your Splash Party looks like a lot of fun ! Cold water is the best thing to enjoy a hot day. I think it is very nice of Mike and Mary to throw such a nice party.

Aaron doesn't play in a league or take lessons. This was a special event between the student council officers and the teachers. Aaron is a class representative on the student council.

I like the idea that students play vs. teachers. Are you in a basketball team/club Aaron ? Or do you play it in school only (sport lessons). Your runs were very good.

Yes, I am very excited to come to america. It was always my dream to spend a year abroad. I just can't await to start my journey to a new continent and meet my hostfamily.

See you soon !

Hi Aaron !
I hope you had a great birthday party. So, you received "Rock Band" from your parents for your Birthday. I love to make music with real instruments but this game is really wicked ! It is very funny to sing and play together.
There are many nice photos of your Birthday, looks like you were having a lot of fun :-)
